A trip to the polls or absentee ballot to vote yes on 37 will send an important message to corporate giants.  The message is that despite 25 million dollars invested against this measure to date, with projections of up to 50 million to defeat this measure, we do care about our health and we can still think for ourselves.

Genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, are organisms that have been created through gene-splicing techniques that are part of biotechnology. This transgenic method of moving genes around is called “genetic engineering”.

The issue of ballot 37 isn’t that GMO’s have been unequivocally proven to cause serious health issues for humans, animals or the environment, as it may take years to really know what damage has been done.   The issue is that labeling of GMO foods will allow accountability should there be problems in the future, and allow the consumer to make intelligent food choices.

Companies that peddle genetically modified food are also the ones that do the safety studies.  So basically, GMO’s are innocent until proven guilty.  Without labeling they can never be held accountable.   Over 40 countries around the world have labeling laws to designate GMO presence.

Another reason to flex our voter muscles is to let the big companies know that we are watching and acting.  Large corporate entities such as Heinz, Hain, Hershey, Nestle, Coca-Cola, Kraft and General Mills are buying out organic startup companies such as Alta Dena, Horizon, Odwalla, Celestial Seasonings, Westbrae and Arrowhead mills. It is not a surprise that many of these previously independent companies are now contributing to defeat ballot measure 37.
.
Here are a few GMO tips to keep in mind:
  • Eat organic. By definition, a genetically modified food cannot be labeled organic.
  • Non-GMO Project Verified food is free of GMOs.
  • ‘Natural’ on a label means nothing, it is just a marketing term.
  • Most GMOs will be found in processed food: nearly 30,000 products or 75% of processed food in grocery stores contain GMOs.
  • Most common GMO foods: corn, soy, canola oil, cotton oil, sugar from sugar beets.  Half of North America’s soy crops are genetically altered.
  • GMO food production requires heavy use of toxic herbicides.
  • Many scientists believe that there is more than enough food for everyone on the planet; the problems of hunger are due to distribution and political issues.  Thus claims that GMOs are needed to end world hunger are not true.

The GMO subject is vast and ever changing, and we need to stay responsive to it.  Projections for this ballot measure to pass are promising; however each one of us needs to vote YES in order to make it so.  And for those who are a little more activist oriented check out: Occupy-Monsanto.com for international action against genetic biohazards.
